The Happy Coeliac goes Dutch!

July 23, 2013 By The Happy Coeliac 7 Comments

No, I’m not splitting the bill when I next go out, rather, in a couple of weeks I will be moving to the Netherlands! My other half will be contracting out there for at least 6 months, and I’ll be packing up the cat and the KitchenAid and going with!

Haarlem kitty

From our previous visits, we know it is a cat-friendly place! (This is not my cat, it’s a random friendly kitty we came across… always a good sign for me!)

We’ll be living in Haarlem, a small city about 20km west of Amsterdam. It’s wonderfully picturesque and relaxed, being a great deal less touristy than Amsterdam (if I liked living in a touristy city, I’d stay in London!). It’s also conveniently, something of a foodie town, and I’ve already sussed out my gluten-free shopping, the best gluten-free sandwiches ever, and even some coeliac safe gluten-free pizza!

The gluten-free bread that was so good I started to worry if it was gluten-free…

But wait! Before you press that unsubscribe button (do I even have one of those?), fear not, this will have very little effect on my blog content, other than a different background for the pictures (read: better natural light!) and a few more Amsterdam/Haarlem restaurant reviews. I will keep my blog focussed on gluten-free living from a broadly UK perspective, but you never know, I may uncover some amazing European brands!

If any of you guys ever make it to Amsterdam or Haarlem, do drop me a line! And of course, if you have any recommendations for me to try, do let me know!

Talk to the people over at Lanskroon and let them know if you’ll be in the neighborhood. You can order gluten free stuff there! http://www.lanskroon.nl/

Hi, my partner has recently (last month!) been told they are coeliac. We are going to Amsterdam at the end of august and wondered if you knew of any good restaurants/cafes that serve gluten free food? This is all new to us so thought a bit of planning would be needed! Thanks, Sarah

Hi Sarah, I’ve only just arrived myself and I haven’t spent a lot of time in Amsterdam itself. For gf pizza, there’s De Italiaan. (http://thehappycoeliac.com/2013/03/review-de-italiaan-amsterdam/). Here in Haarlem (15 minutes on the train) there is Woodstone Pizza (http://www.woodstonepizza.nl/woodstone-haarlem/) which does excellent gluten-free pizzas (€2 extra though), and Hofje Zonder Zorgen is excellent for lunches (http://thehappycoeliac.com/2013/03/review-hofje-zonder-zorgen-haarlem/). For lunch in Amsterdam, try Bagels & Beans – they do a gluten-free bagel (http://www.bagelsbeans.nl/menukaart.asp)

      Hope this helps!
