Last night I attended the launch party of the Rebel Bakery’s new Christmas pop-up shop, in Willesden Green, London. The Rebel Bakery is an online shop, specialising in gluten-free cupcakes and celebration cakes. Have a look at their gallery – some of their creations are simply stunning (I met one woman who had their cupcakes for her wedding).
As far as I could tell, this was their first foray into having a physical location for their shop, and everyone was very excited about it. Although all their cakes are gluten-free, a lot of the people there were just “normal” people (i.e. not those who get overexcited about gf cakes like we do!) but with the flavour and design of their cakes, it’s easy to see why everyone is so enthusiastic about them.
There were many free nibbles dotted around, but looking at the size of the cupcakes (they are BIG!) I knew pretty quickly that I wouldn’t be able to try all the flavours, so I went for this adorable looking gingerbread cupcake. I would say that perhaps the icing is a bit much (says the girl who spent 2 months this year furiously devouring anything sugary), but I love the idea of topping a cupcake with a little biscuit! The cake itself was dense and moist, and honestly, you wouldn’t know it’s gluten-free. In fact, many of the people at the party didn’t seem to realise that every item they make is gluten-free!
They had three types of homemade marshmallow for us to try, and boy, I think these were my favourite! I’ve always wanted to try making my own marshmallows, and trying these has made me determined to give it a go. They melt in your mouth, unlike the store bought variety, which tend to be a bit rubbery.
I couldn’t stop taking pictures of these beauties!
This pop-up shop is somewhat of a gem – not to mention the decent prices for what you get. A box of 4 cupcakes is £10, a small fruitcake is £10 and a large is £15, and the little bits and bobs (marshmallows etc) are sold individually. Perhaps not everyday prices, but I can’t imagine anything better for a coeliac than to be presented with some of these cakes at Christmas. Truly lovely, and well worth the long trek from the other end of London!
