When I visited the Seine Rigger, had it not been for Gluten-Free Mrs D’s review, I would never have known them to do gluten-free fish and chips. There was no indication on their website or menu, and it all felt a little hush-hush-wink-wink-say-no-more (They have since updated their website which clears shows that they do cater for the gluten-free).
They are a small, unpretentious Fish and Chip shop located into the leafy depths of Surrey, and having been there twice now, they are always full. That’s a good sign.
If you give them 30 minutes notice, they can prepare a gluten free batter for the fish which is cooked in a dedicated gluten-free fryer. Because it is smaller than the main fryer, you are limited in what you can have – cod or haddock – I went for the haddock (UK cod is facing collapse due to overfishing). Still, anyone with a gluten-free fryer is my new best friend, so I’m not going to moan over lack of choice.
My boyfriend enjoyed the chance to eat some gluteny food for once, and ordered the belly-busting large sized fish (definitely would NOT fit in their gluten-free fryer!)
My fish and chips were smaller, yes, but the batter was much lighter and tastier than I remember fish & chips being. The fish was of excellent quality, and you could see why it was so popular in the local area. My only complaint with the meal was that the chips weren’t quite as fried and greasy as I had hoped they would be – but I imagine they were far healthier than in the average chippy.
The first time I visited I was able to have the pineapple fritters and good lord they were delicious! However the second time I went they didn’t make enough batter so I had to do without! Lesson learned, next time call ahead and specifically ask for enough batter for fish + fritters!
Overall, this was a very pleasant experience, the staff were friendly, and one phone call in advance was all it took for a fun, safe dinner out. This would be the perfect treat for your coeliac or gluten-intolerant child.
My one suggestion? Don’t forget to bring your own condiments! (I steered clear of the malt vinegar and miscellaneous sauces)
